What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis or arthrosis is the most common type of arthritis, a degenerative joint disease.. It affects joints by making them stiff and painful, damaging the surface between joints so they don’t move as smoothly as they should.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Joint pain and stiffness are the main symptoms of arthritis; however, some people also experience tenderness, swelling, and a grating or crackling sound when they move the affected joints.
Symptoms of osteoarthritis vary from person to person. For some people the symptoms are mild, but for others the symptoms are continuous and more severe, making it difficult for them to carry out day-to-day tasks.
The most vulnerable areas to osteoarthritis are knees, hips and small joints of hand, but almost any joint can be affected by osteoarthritis.
Causes of Osteoarthritis
Our joints are always vulnerable to low levels of damage, but most of the time our body repairs the damage by itself..
However, for osteoarthritis patients the protective cartilage at the ends of their bones breaks down, causing their joints to swell, become painful, and restrict movement.
Although the exact cause of osteoarthritis is unknown, there are several lifestyle factors that can increase the risk of osteoarthritis:
-
Joint Injury: overusing the joint before it completely heals from injury
-
Secondary Arthritis: osteoarthritis can develop if the joints are affected by other types of arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis
-
Age: The chances of osteoarthritis increases with age
-
Obesity: Extra weight puts extra pressure on your knees and hips, making these areas vulnerable to osteoarthritis
