Gary's re4covbery from Transverse Myelitis (TM)

Aged just 56, while at work, Gary suddenly lost both feeling and movement in his hands and arms and by the time an ambulance had arrived, he had completely lost the use of his legs. This sudden onset of paralysis had been caused by a condition known as Transverse Myelitis (TM) which is a rare neurological condition which causes damage to the myelin and the neurons in the spinal cord.   This onset of TM led to Gary having a C3 spinal cord injury and he was immediately taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow for treatment.  However, Gary then caught pneumonia and owing to the severity of his condition went into a coma for three weeks.  He had subsequently then been transferred to the Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge who were better equipped to care for him.  Following a 2 month stay, Gary then entered a period of rehabilitation at St Margaret’s Hospital in Epping.  Within 5 weeks, Gary had begun to walk again.  He is now training to become a mentor as part of a scheme run by the Spinal Injury Association to help others who have been affected by a spinal cord injury.

Throughout his ongoing rehabilitation, Gary visited the spinal cord injury specialists at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) at Stanmore and it was here that he was introduced to NHC Cyclo-Therapy from Niagara.  Gary explains how the therapy pad has helped him:

“While at Stanmore, I began to use the circulation stimulation pads to improve my hand movement.  I found it to be a very relaxing way to improve the circulation in my hands and within 20 minutes of using the pad, I really started to feel the difference.  Having improved hand movement allowed the Occupational Therapists to massage my hands and increase manipulation.  However, I found it difficult to achieve the same results at home which was when the specialists at the RNOH suggested I purchase my own therapy pad.  I really can’t believe the difference it is making to my rehabilitation process, I find it easy to use and very comfortable.  I’m definitely making steady progress and owing to the NHC Cyclo-Therapy vibration, I’ve really started to notice an improvement in my hand movement.  I’d thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wishes to improve their muscle movement and improve circulation, it has made such a difference for me.”
